Drastic cuts to the National Institutes of Health in President Trump’s proposed budget are drawing opposition from the Academy and the other members of the National Alliance for Eye and Vision Research. We’re asking Congress to reject the suggested cuts, which total $7.2 billion and threaten to derail progress on important eye-health research programs. Amid the NIH cuts that the president’s proposed budget asks Congress to implement is a 25 percent reduction to the National Eye Institute below the previous year’s level. The budget proposal, if implemented, would also slash NIH’s direct costs, a move that could further jeopardize funds available to vision researchers.
